Neighbors start redesigning Bridge Spot
An open house, a zine workshop and an online survey are shaping a new basketball and futsal court, a skate park and public art under the freeway.

Bridge Spot, beneath the freeway on Virginia Avenue SE
Bridge Spot, the underpass on the south edge of Garfield Park, has been a skate spot, a pickup court and an open-air gallery for years. As DDOT wrapped up its roadway work, we started asking the people who use it what should come next.
In winter 2026, neighbors came to a community open house with a DIY hot cocoa bar, and to a zine workshop with solarpunk dc, where people wrote and drew what Bridge Spot could become. The online survey is still open, and 47 people have answered it so far.
Bridge Spot has four projects. The Krughoff Pickleball Center was years in the making before the workshops, and it opened in July 2026. What we heard is shaping the other three: the CVS Health Futsal Court, opening November 19, 2026; a skate park designed with skaters; and new public art. We can't promise everything will stay exactly as it is, but the things people already love about the space are what we're designing around.
Read what we've learned so far in the Bridge Spot Engagement Report, and take the survey if you haven't yet.
